Set 400 : Flatbed utility truck

Ready to build a slice of LEGO history? On this page you’ll find the parts list and build instructions to recreate the truck shown on the box art of LEGO set 400 — a classic from the early 1960s.

Set 400 was one of those early “universal building” kits: simple, flexible, and designed for free-form creativity. According to LEGO-set archives, the 400 series (also known as “Small Wheels” or “Universal Building Set,” depending on the edition) was available from around 1962, and featured a minimal but versatile selection of bricks and wheels.

That little truck you see? It’s exactly the sort of vehicle a kid from the 1960s might have dreamed up after school: compact, functional and ready to roll. Its box-art design echoes real-life utility trucks of the era: modest but sturdy, with a simple flatbed or cargo area, small-scale wheels, and blocky proportions — reflecting the no-frills trucks that carried loads around factories or local businesses in the post-war period.
